2025 Bucks County Classic Review

We get to see a lot of bike races, and the secret is that the hometown Bucks County Classic is one of the monuments of American bike racing. Paired with the Discover Doylestown Arts Festival, the race benefits from thousands of spectators on the 1.7-mile, technical course. While the race always benefits from a strong field of top American and even international riders, this year was special. The only international professional race in the United States, the Maryland Cycling Classic, was held on Saturday, meaning that many of those top international teams made their way up I-95 to Doylestown on Sunday.  It was really an opportunity for our local athletes to measure themselves against top domestic and international talent, including the eventual Penn Medicine Doylestown Health Women's Race winner, Alex Volstad of the Education First-Oatly world tour program, and the Thompson Pro Men's Race winner and 2025 national champion, Lucas Burgoyne of the Team Cadence Cyclery p/b Encore Wire. Thank you to Ed Doyle for his article about our team at the 2025 Bucks County Classic, which you can read here. Here's a link to the full results

The Thompson Pro Men's Race featured the deepest field of racers in the recent history of the Bucks County Classic, with the aforementioned Lucas Burgoyne (Team Cadence Cyclery p/b Encore Wire) leading the way. The Texas-based team has won most of America's biggest bike races in 2025, and we're proud that our alumna racer, Sam Smith, from Doylestown, PA, has been an important part of their success. Colin Fitzgerald finished 24th overall and was our best finisher. He feels a little cheated because the officials made a mistake in the final lap count that may have cost him some spots. He'll have one more chance this season, racing at the New Haven Grand Prix this weekend. Andy Wolfe and Sean Guydish also recorded official finishes for our team, while Chris Meacham, Andy Dudle, Alden Weinhold, and Connor Thompson recorded starts. It was also great to see another team alumna, Alex St. Andre (UCI CTM: Team Skyline), recording a finish after a long season racing in Europe.

If you thought the men's field was difficult, the Penn Medicine Doylestown Health Women's Pro Race was even deeper. Besides the winner, Alex Volstad (UCI: Education First-Oatly), there was Cuban Olympian Marlies Mejias Garcia (UCI CTM: Virginia Blue Ridge TeamTwentyEight), Canadian national champion Alison Jackson (UCI: Education First-Oatly), who won the 2023 Paris-Roubaix Femmes, and Australian Olympian Bryony Botha (Fearless Femmes p/b Robertet), among many others. Kudos to our Julianna Rutecki (West Chester) finishing 42nd in the 60-woman field, capping off a long season that included racing across the country and at the USA Cycling Road and Track National Championships. Teammate Danii Van Niekerk (Johannesburg, South Africa) succumbed to a flu bug that bit a few of the racers last weekend and did not start. Danii returns to South Africa shortly for the season in the southern hemisphere.

Sixteen-year-old, Pipersville native, Noah Shumskas started off the 2025 season with a big win at Branchbrook, but struggled throughout the season with back pain associated with his growing body. Along the way, he's raced the USA Cycling Amateur Road and Track National Championships, several national and regional races, and pushed through physical difficulties. So it was great to see him finish 5th overall in the rain at the Men's Amateur Race at the 2025 Bucks County Classic in front of family and friends. This was our best finish in a very stacked amateur field since Doylestown's Alden Weinhold got our only ever Bucks County Podium a few years ago. The future is bright with Noah leading the way.

Lansdale's Jason Wood was an original member of our elite team, racing for our team from 2017-2022 before taking time away from the bike for his young family and earning an MBA. It was great to see him back on the bike, finishing 13th overall in the Men's Masters (35+) race. Our club patron, Mike Bowe (Doylestown), finished 8th in the Men's Masters (55+) race, alongside teammates Pete Smith (Doylestown) and Steve Schwarz (Doylestown), who was 13th in the Men's Masters 45+ race.
